Ohio State Robberies

Over the course of the past week, there have been three Ohio State students held up at gunpoint. Two were robbed of their belongings. One, a female and also the most recent victim, raised a commotion and the men ran off. This video focuses on a similar string of robberies from two years ago. Here are some of the questions we would like you to consider: Is the Columbus Police Department doing enough to help the campus students feel safe? Should the Ohio State Campus Police force be more responsive and pro-active to helping prevent these attacks? What can we do as students to help keep us more safe, especially when we are at a place or location which is off-campus? What would you do if you were attacked?

  1. Even though there have been robberies, I wouldn't say that I feel unsafe on campus. I have some night classes and never feel threatened on the walk back to my dorm. Obviously students would feel more safe if people weren't robbed, but the police can't be everywhere at all times. If I was attacked, I think I would do exactly what the most recent victim did: scream. Drawing attention to the scene would most likely force the suspects away from the scene.

  2. I do not feel that unsafe on campus; however, I also take precautions when on campus. I usually do not walk alone on campus, especially at night. I think that students on campus can work together and watch out for each other. If I was attacked, I would make a commotion just as the victim did. Hopefully this would startle the attackers and make them leave.

  3. Well for those of us that don't live on campus, some areas are quite sketchy. People go by rules of thumb like going past 4th is probably not a good idea. But breaking into my apartment would really be unfortunate because there's just nothing I could do. It seems like the rate of the crimes have been increasing and the criminals are being pretty bold about it. I have noticed at least a quadrupling of the police force off campus and its actually nice to see.

  4. Recently I saw many cops were patrolling around south campus area. In China, safety problems never bother me. Sometimes I can even just walk out from the night club at 2 am and keep walking on the street until 5 or 6 am. I live on w 8th ave. And there's a robbery happened on 10th and worthington which was the path I usually back home. Now I change it to go through neil ave. I feel alert when the night gets dark. Actually, I stay at home after I've done my last class. If I were the victim, I may probably let them take my stuff. At least, life is the most precious thing.

  5. The recent robberies have been a reminder to me to be smart about walking around campus, especially at night. I have always felt safe on campus, but I think it is a good idea to aware of your surroundings and try not to walk alone. We are all aware of the better areas to be walking around at night and to keep our doors locked at all time. Whether I am more aware of them now or they are increasing in numbers, I have seen a lot of cops paroling the area. I believe OSU is a safe place to be; its just important to be smart about walking around at night.

  6. I don't technically feel unsafe, but it raises awareness to every student. You really should be careful of where you're at and who you are with because you never know what could happen. I always see cops everywhere, every night i go out so it isn't like they aren't there it's just difficult to see everything that is happening all at once. I feel that students should just be more cautious and possibly carry some sort of protection if they must. Pepper spray for example. If it does happen at least you are not harmed and make sure you get the best description of them as you can.

  7. I don't really feel unsafe on campus. I think that the Columbus Police Department and the Ohio State Campus Police force are trying everything they can to apprehend these criminals. Despite the police efforts though, people need to be more vigilant on their part. I do believe that we should be more cautious when we are walking on campus at night. These recent robberies have mostly been at night. No one should be walking alone on/off campus that late at night. If you absolutely have to do it, then ask a friend to walk with you.

  8. While on campus, I don't feel unsafe at all. Regardless, at night time I try and not walk alone and always carry my cell phone in my hand when walking in the dark. I think that with the emergency buttons spread across campus and the campus police driving around, there is a sense of protection from the unknown. Off campus is a different story. I think that the university should install those emergency buttons in the areas that students live off campus and police should drive around. You definitely need to be more aware when you have less protection and never walk alone. Also people should install alarm systems in their homes to prevent break ins like the one discussed in the video.

  9. The first two robberies were pretty straight forward, they held up guys at gunpoint and the guys cooperated and both people went on their ways. For the first time, someone started to stand up against them by screaming, and they booked it. This goes to show that these burglars are not very serious. Of course you should never take a risk because some people have mental problems, but for the most part, I do not believe that these burglars have the emotional power to pull the trigger. Obviously you should be cautious and more times than not, give up what you have, but it still is being worried about too much.

  10. The robberies happened all the time no matter in poor area or rich. What we should do now is not catching the bad guys just like the police officers. Because they have guns, it's dangerous. We should be careful and do not walk at night alone. I noticed that few of the robberies happened at day time. When someone walks at 2am or 3am alone, what should happened? I think we haven't pay much attention on these robberies. Fighting with the gun robbers is impossible but choose the right time to leave to end the party, to go home is what we can control and it's easy for us. If we don't care about ourselves, even if school put 10000 more emergency bottons on campus area, there's still useless.
